Due Date: February 14
For this assignment, you will create something using both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Moving in and out of a program is important because it demonstrates how applications not only work together but also enhance each other. And, the point of this particular assignemnt is to acquire the understanding that you cannot simply Save a file and re-open it in another. For one file to work in another program, it must be prepared in a specific manner. For this assignment, you will utilize the Export function to transfer from Illustrator to Photoshop.
Let's Get Started
- Make a new folder in your "Communication 1" folder and call it "Smiley Clock"
- Open Illustrator
- Make a new file (Letter size is okay) - Be sure to set the units to Inches
- If your Control bar is not enabled (the tool options bar that sits right under the Menu bar) go to Window and select Control.
- In the Tool Bar, make sure the fill is turned off and the stroke is set to “black”
- Select the Circle tool on the Tool Bar
- Click once on the drawing surface
- A dialog box will appear where you can input the size you want. Type a Width of 6 inches and a Height of 6 inches
- Make another circle by clicking on the drawing surface (Make this circle 5 inches wide by 5 inches tall)
- Center the 5 inch circle inside the 6 inch circle using the “Align” buttons you see highlighted in the example above
- Click on Window, on the Menu, and then select “Pathfinder”
- Select both circles and then click on the “Exclude” button on the Pathfinder panele. This will join the circles into a single ring and remove the center portion
- Fill the ring with black
- Create a new circle that is a half inch by a half inch in size. Fill the circle with black. Give it a 3 pixel white stroke
- Align the half inch circle with the black ring (centered)
- Lock the layer and rename the layer to “Clock Ring”
- Make a new layer and rename it “Numbers”
- Use the Type tool to type the number 12 (Use the Myriad font and set the font size to 50)
- Position the number 12 where it is commonly found on a clock
- Use the Type tool to type the number 6, using the same font and size
- Position the number 6 where it is commonly found on a clock
- Now, select all of the objects on the page. Use the “Align” panel and click on the “Horizontal Align Center” button. This will align the 12 and the 6 with the center of the clock
- Create the 3 and the 9 for the clock face. Position them where they need to go. Align them with the Clock ring using the “Vertical Align Center” button
- Lock this layer.
Create the clock hands
- Create a new layer, drag it underneath the Clock Ring layer, and label it “Hands”
- Click on the Rectangle shape tool and click on the drawing surface. Set the height at 2 inches and the width at .1 inch
- Select the Minute hand and then click on “Object” on the menu , then “Transform” from the drop down list, and then select “Rotate”. Set the rotate angle at 30
- Fill the shape with black, stroke with a 2 pixel white
- Position the hand so that it is pointing at (roughly) 11:00
- Click on the Rectangle shape tool and click on the drawing surface. Set the height at 1.25 inches and the width at .1 inch
- Fill the shape with black, stroke with a 2 pixel white
- Select the Minute hand and then click on “Object” on the menu, then “Transform” from the drop down list, and then select “Rotate”.
- Set the rotate angle at -40
- Position the hand so that it is pointing at (roughly) between 7:00 and 8:00
The Smiley Face Background
- Create a new layer and drag it underneath all the other layers
- Rename this layer as “Smiley Face”
- Go to MHSGraphics.com and download the “Smiley Face” sample image from the “Source Files” page (under Home).
- Save this file to your student folder
- In Illustrator, click “File” on the menu, and then select “Place”. Select the “Smiley Face” image located in your student folder - You will need to transform the smiley face because it is too small
- Click on the smiley face and then click on the “Transform” panel. Enter in 5.25 inches for Smiley’s width. Do the same for Smiley’s height
- Center Smiley to the clock ring using the Align function
- Save this file as “Clock”
- Unlock all layers
- Click on File, then select “Export” from the drop down menu. The Save as Type should be “Photoshop PSD”, Save as “Clock”
- Make sure the box for “Write Layers” is selected.
- Set the Screen Resolution to 72 ppi (points per inch)
Photoshopping Smiley!
- Open Photoshop
- Open the “Clock” photoshop file.
- Notice the white that protrudes from behind the clock ring? This is part of the Smiley Face layer. We need to get rid of those white portions.
- Hold the Shift Key and use the Magic Wand tool to select those areas. Then, “Delete” them.
- Select the “Clock Ring” layer
- Add the “Bevel and Emboss” layer style to the layer
- Set these Bevel parameters:
- Depth: 123%
- Size: 35 px
- Angle: 112
- Altitude: 64
- Change the Highlight color from white to yellow and it’s blend mode to “Normal”
- Click on “View” on the Menu bar and then select "Show Rulers"
- Drag a guide from the rulers so that it rests on top of the clock ring.(see example below)
- Use the Ellipse (circle) Marquee to draw the crystal. Click on one corner where the guides intersect and drag diagonally until you connect with the opposing corner. Notice how the circle snaps into place
- Create a new layer
- Drop white paint into the Ellipse (Circle) that you created.
- Deselect the Ellipse (Circle).
